Want to add an extra layer of trust to your profile? Selfie Verification is a simple way to show others you’re the real deal.
It’s a voluntary process that verifies your profile with a quick video selfie. Once verified, you’ll get a badge on your profile, helping potential matches feel more confident in connecting with you.
Note: In certain regions, Hinge requires users to complete a biometric Face Check™, as described further in our FAQ. If a user’s profile photos and Face Check scan match, they will also get a Selfie Verified badge. We have noted below where the required Face Check modifies the applicable terms of our optional Selfie Verification process.
Whether you verify or not, all users will be able to see which Hinge profiles are verified, so you can make more informed decisions about who you interact with. It’s important to note that this feature doesn't guarantee the safety of a particular user. Always use your best judgment and review our Safe Dating Advice before meeting or sharing personal details with a potential match.
To selfie verify, you’ll need at least one photo on your profile that displays your face from a front view. The image should be crisp and unfiltered, with the user clearly in focus and the only subject of the photo. The user shouldn’t be wearing sunglasses and should be facing the camera directly.
How To Start the Selfie Verification Process
- Tap the Photo icon on the far right of your navigation bar.
- Tap on the Gray Check Mark
under your name.
- Click Continue and Allow Camera Access.
- Follow the prompts to capture your selfie.
Once you're verified, keep in mind Selfie Verification is based on the photos on your profile at the time of verification.
Changing your photos after verifying may result in a loss of verification. If you change your photos and lose verification, simply adjust your photos again and retry.
Having Trouble Verifying?
For security reasons, our Support Team cannot manually verify a photo on your behalf.
Be sure the photos on your profile meet the following requirements:
- Your photo does not include any other people (including in the background)
- Your photo's background is a plain-colored wall
- You're not too far away from the camera
- The image is crisp, not blurry or pixelated
- The image does not have any filters on it
- You are directly facing the camera
- You are not wearing sunglasses
- The photo does not crop any part of your face or head
- The photo is an original, not a photo of an existing photograph
If you confirm your selfie meets the above requirements and are still running into trouble, contact Support using the link below.
How Selfie Verification Works
Selfie Verification is quick and secure. It uses two steps to verify your identity:
- Liveness Check – Confirms that a real, live person is taking the video (not an altered or pre-recorded clip).
- 3D Face Authentication – Compares your video selfie to your profile photos using facial recognition technology.
3D Face Authentication detects your face in your video selfie and your profile photos and extracts facial geometries using facial recognition technology to generate a unique number or facial geometry “template.” These templates help to estimate your age and check whether the person in your video selfie is the same as in your profile photos.
Your facial geometry templates are deleted within 24 hours. Your video selfie has been deleted and has not been added to your profile, but we keep three screenshots from it for the purposes of auditing and managing this feature.
Note: In regions where Face Check is required, facial geometry data is retained for the life of the account, plus the applicable retention period following account closure, as described in our FAQ and Privacy Policy.
How do you use the Facial Geometry information?
We only use your facial geometry information for Selfie Verification (including age estimation). To perform this process, we share your facial geometry information and screenshots with Match Group, LLC., a Match Group company that operates this feature upon our instructions and on our behalf as our service provider.
Note: In regions where Face Check is required, facial geometry data is also used to detect whether other profiles are using your likeness, as described in our FAQ.
They store and use your facial geometry information, screenshots, and age estimate on their Amazon Web Service (AWS) instances. This information and screenshots are deleted from their Amazon Web Services instances in the timeframes below under “What will you keep after verification is complete?”.
If you want to learn more about AWS’s privacy practices, you can click here. We do not share your facial geometry information and screenshots with other third parties.
What will you keep after verification is complete?
We will keep three screenshots from your video selfie during the life of your account to audit and manage our selfie verification feature. These screenshots are deleted upon account closure in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
We’ll also keep the results of the Selfie Verification process (i.e., verified or not) and your age estimate for the life of your account. We may use your age estimate and audit images to train select machine learning models that power our trust and safety tools, as well as to test and audit such models and tools. We will delete this data upon account closure pursuant to our Privacy Policy.
We do not keep the underlying facial geometry information or “template” beyond the Selfie Verification process (usually complete within 24 hours). We do not keep your video selfie.
Note: In regions where Face Check is required, the facial geometry data is retained for the life of the account, and it is deleted from our systems following account closure, in accordance with our Privacy Policy and as described in our FAQ. Even in these regions, the video selfie is not retained beyond completion of the Face Check process.
Under what legal authority do you process the Selfie Verification information?
We process the Selfie Verification information with your consent.
What is Hinge’s Policy for the retention and destruction of biometric information?
Retention
Biometric information—namely, facial geometries that allow us to conduct facial recognition on your video selfie and profile photos to complete the Selfie Verification—are only created and retained with your consent for the duration of the Selfie Verification process, which may take up to 24 hours. Once your Selfie Verification is complete, the biometric information is deleted. We retain screenshots from the video selfie you took for the above purposes, but the facial geometry information pulled from your video is deleted.
Note: In regions where Face Check is required, biometric information (i.e., facial geometry data) is retained for the life of the account, and it is deleted from our systems following account closure, in accordance with our Privacy Policy and as described in our FAQ.
Destruction
When Hinge deletes the biometric information after completing the Selfie Verification process, it is permanently purged from our systems and can no longer be retrieved.
