If we detect potentially inappropriate language in a message, we may send a check-in notification and ask, “Did this message bother you?”
This check-in is meant to give you a moment to reflect and let us know how a message might have made you feel. It’s a way to speak up about something you may not have liked, but don’t necessarily feel warrants a report.
You are never required to answer, but we always welcome your feedback. Your answers also help us continue to learn and improve our systems.
When does this notification appear?
If we detect certain language in a message you receive, you may see the following prompt:
You can tap Yes, No, or simply close the prompt if you would rather not answer.
- If you tap Yes, we will offer a way to learn more about reporting, in case you would like to take that step.
- If you close the prompt or tap No, the check-in will disappear.
Your match will not know whether you received or responded to the prompt.
Your response allows us to better understand what daters are experiencing on Hinge, and helps us ensure that users behave in accordance with our Community Guidelines.
If you close the prompt, you can still submit a report from your Messages at any time by clicking the ellipses icon in the upper right corner and selecting Report. To protect all daters, reports are confidential - your match will never be alerted that you made a report. See more about how to send a report here.
Why we made this feature
Hinge takes a proactive approach to safety across our platform, so we may occasionally check in with the sender or recipient of a message.
We created Did This Bother You to check in with recipients during moments that might feel uncomfortable, unclear, or hard to name.
At times, we may also send a gentle check-in with users before they send a message with Are You Sure?, a feature that encourages daters to reflect before sending a message that might land wrong. Learn more about Are You Sure? here.
Can I turn this off?
If you respond No or close the prompt two times in a row, we will pause these prompts for 90 days.
