Here’s everything you need to know about how location works: how to set it, and what to expect if you’re ever traveling or moving.
Where Hinge is Available
Hinge is available to download in select countries. Our most up-to-date list is here.
How to Set Your Location
As part of the onboarding process when you create a new Hinge account, you’ll be asked where you want to meet other daters. You have two options for completing this part of your profile:
- You can tap the Compass Icon to use your device-level location data. This will generate a pop-up requesting your permission to share your location data with Hinge. If you do so, the pin on your map will move to your device’s current location and display the neighborhood corresponding to this location.
- Alternatively, you can set your location manually by typing a city, neighborhood, address, or zip code in the search bar that appears below the map.
Regardless of the option you choose, you can move the pin anywhere on the map before setting the location that other users will see on your profile.
Note: For new members, Hinge only supports setting your initial location in countries where we are available for download. If you create a new account and set your location to an area where Hinge is not available for download, your account may be removed.
Changing the Name of Your Location
When you set your location, you can choose how specific you want to be:
- Use the Search Bar to search for your location by name
- Or, Zoom in to select a more specific neighborhood (e.g., “West Village”)
- You can also Zoom out to select a broader area (e.g., “Manhattan”).
Location names come directly from Google Maps. If you prefer to keep your location broader for privacy reasons, you can write in a more general location or select a wider area before saving.
If you manually add your location, Hinge will only display the name of the neighborhood you select. We will never show your exact address.
How to Adjust Your Location
Hinge does not automatically update your location (for example, by registering and recording your location each time you log in). So, if you move or travel, you’ll need to update your location.
To change your location:
- Tap your Photo Icon in the navigation bar.
- Tap the Pencil Icon next to your profile photo.
- Under My Vitals, tap Location.
- Use the map to adjust your location
- Tap the Compass Icon to use your device’s current location
- Note: You’ll need to allow Hinge to access your current location, unless you previously provided permission.
- Search manually using the search bar below the map.
- You can enter a city, neighborhood, address, or zip code.
- You can also pinch and zoom on the map to drop your location exactly where you want.Once you’ve selected your location, press the back arrow to save your changes.
- Tap the Compass Icon to use your device’s current location
You can also adjust your location from within the Discover Feed:
- Tap the sliders icon to open Preferences
- Tap My Neighborhood
- Select your location using the Compass Icon, Map or Search Bar.
Location Preferences & Dealbreakers
You can adjust who you see by setting your preferred radius.
To set a Location Dealbreaker:
- Tap your Dating Preferences Icon in the navigation bar.
- Tap Maximum Distance
- Set your Radius using the slider
If you’d like to set a dealbreaker, tap the box next to This is a Dealbreaker.
Setting a dealbreaker ensures you only see users who set their location within your specific distance setting.
Note: Radius is based on radial distance; we don’t account for travel time!
Location vs Hometown
Daters can share their Location and their Hometown on their profiles.
-
Location is where someone is now.
Location is displayed next to the Compass icon in the Vitals bar.
-
Hometown shows where a user is from.
Hometown is displayed next to the House icon under the vitals bar.
Using Hinge while Traveling
We want daters to have the opportunity to find connection wherever life takes them. Whether you're planning a quick trip or a long stay, you can update your location in the app to meet people in the area you're visiting.
However, being able to set your location in the app is not the same as being able to download or access the app in every location or country. We recommend checking our availability page before traveling to confirm whether Hinge is available for download in your destination.
