Sometimes, a friend can say in one sentence what would take you a whole profile to explain. Friend’s Take allows you to invite the people who know you best to add authentic stories and perspectives about you to your Hinge profile.
We understand that daters want help representing themselves authentically on Hinge, and who better to help them than the people who know them best?
The FAQs below cover how Friend’s Take works, what data Hinge collects, and your rights - whether you’re the one requesting a take or writing one. We may refer to people who submit takes as “Friends,” but keep in mind that you can request a take from anyone who knows you well: family, coworkers, or even your neighbors!
How Does it Work?
If you have access to the Friend’s Take feature, you can send a Friend’s Take link to your friends, family, and other people in your circle by following these steps:
- Tap your Photo Icon (bottom right of the navigation bar).
- Tap the Pencil Icon next to your profile photo.
- Under your profile photo, tap Friend’s Take.
Tapping Share Link will generate a link you can share with whoever you’d like to hear from. The best part? They don’t need a Hinge account to open the link or write a take!
Note: Anyone who has access to your unique link can submit a Take, so be sure to only share your link with people you trust. Links are valid for 24 hours, and the same link can be sent to up to 10 different people.
Once someone opens the link, they can select from a list of prompts - like “A moment I still laugh about” or “What they’re doing at a party” - and answer in text or photo format.
Takes should not include:
- Private or sensitive personal information (such as health or financial information);
- Content that features individuals other than the dater or their friend;
- Content that otherwise violates the rights of a third party or any applicable laws.
When your friend is satisfied with their take, they can add a name or nickname, select their relationship to you, and submit it. If your friend changes their mind, they can close their browser to exit without submitting a take.
If submitted, Hinge will send the take to the dater who requested it for their review.
Reviewing and Managing Your Takes:
We’ll notify you when you have a new Friend’s Take to review, and you can either add it to your profile, delete it, or take no action. Daters cannot edit takes they receive.
If you add your Friend’s Take to your profile, its contents (including your friend’s name and relationship to you) will be visible to other Hinge members who come across your profile.
At any time, you can “hide” a take on your profile. Once a take is hidden, you can put it back on your profile later or permanently delete the take.
To hide a take on your Profile:
- Under Edit Profile tap Friend’s Take.
- Under Visible on Profile, tap Hide under the take you’d like to hide.
- This take will now appear under the Not Shown tab.
To delete a take permanently, simply tap Delete under the take you’d like to remove.
What Information Will Hinge Collect?
If you’re a dater using the Friend’s Take feature, Hinge may collect or generate:
- Data regarding your engagement with the feature, such as information shown to you and actions you took (e.g., generating your personal links, adding takes to your profile, hiding/deleting takes, etc.); and
- Customer support data, such as your interactions with our Customer Care team regarding Friends’ Take, reports, or queries that other users may submit about your takes(s), and moderation records.
If you’re a friend from whom a take is requested, Hinge will collect or generate:
- The content of any takes you voluntarily submit, including the take itself, the optional name that you include with your take, and your relationship to the dater;
- Data about the device(s) you use to access the Friend’s Take website;
- Data regarding your engagement with the Friend’s Take website, such as when you accessed it, information shown to you, and actions you took (e.g., whether and when you submitted a take); and
- Customer support data, such as your interactions with our Customer Care team regarding Friend’s Take, reports or queries that other users may submit about your Friend’s Take content, and moderation records.
How Will Hinge Use This Information?
Hinge will use the information we collect for Friend’s Take to:
- Operate the feature, including by serving the web-based submission experience to the person filling out a take, processing the take, transmitting it to the dater for their review, and displaying the take on the dater’s profile if they choose.
- Maintain the safety of our platform and users, including by taking steps to prevent, detect, and remove prohibited content and prevent abuse;
- Improve this feature, including through machine learning and other technologies; and
- Comply with our legal obligations, as necessary.
Can Friend’s Takes Be Reported?
Yes, Friend’s Takes can be reported just like any other content that appears on a Hinge profile.
If a take is reported, Hinge reserves the right to investigate and take appropriate action, including, without limitation:
- Removing the reported content;
- Removing the dater’s Hinge account
If I Made a Take for a Friend, Can I Remove It?
Takes appear on a Hinge dater’s profile based on mutual consent: friends voluntarily submit them, and the Hinge dater chooses whether to add them to their profile.
Daters can remove a take from their profile, and delete the take if they wish, directly in the Hinge app.
Those who submit a take can request the deletion of a Friend’s Take by contacting Hinge Support with a clear description of the request. Hinge will inform the dater (to whom the take relates and on whose profile it appears) of the friend’s request. However, Hinge will ultimately honor the friend’s request to delete the take even if the dater objects to such request.
How Long Will Hinge Keep Friends’ Takes?
If a dater deletes a Friend’s Take, Hinge will delete the Friend’s Take content within 90 days.
Otherwise, Hinge will retain takes for the life of the dater’s account, so that they may rotate different takes on and off their profile as they see fit.
Hinge may retain limited data for longer periods, to comply with applicable law and where necessary to achieve Hinge’s interest in maintaining the safety of the platform and our users.
